As Namaste is to say *may the Divine Essence IN me Embrace the Divine Essence IN you as a Divine Essence of One*, so too Metta is to say *may the Loving Kindness IN me Embrace the Loving Kindness IN you as Loving Kindness of One*, so too Zikr is to say *may the Self Remembering IN me Embrace the Self Remembering IN you as a Self Remembrance of One*. It is in the Inner Embracing of each other that we Realize that we are all cut from the same bolt of cloth yet most do not Realize it yet. -- Yogajyotii

Like some pure clarity Distilled out of a jeweled mirror The spring waters fill the many lakes Reflect up into my eyes Here on Mt. Lu And the moon above my forehead Becomes a bright pearl. -- Han Shan Te-ch'ing

Though all his life a fool associates with a wise man, he no more comprehends the Truth than a spoon tastes the flavor of the soup. -- Dhammapada

Seeking the Way Amid the deepest mountain paths, The retreat I find None other than My original abode - satori! -- Dogen

By effort and heedfulness, discipline and self-mastery, let the wise one make for himself an island which no flood can overwhelm. -- Dhammapada

As the moon slips from behind a cloud and shines, so the master comes out from behind ignorance and shines. Swans rise and fly toward the sun. What magic! So do the pure conquer the armies of illusion and rise to fly. -- Buddha

Having entered a royal court or a company of people he should not speak lies. He should not speak lies (himself) nor incite others to do so. He should completely avoid falsehood. -- Sutta Nipata

Only break through the world of words so that the flower of Being may bloom. Just become suddenly still, inside and out, so that you may pierce through the thin shell of the world, and fill the entire cosmos. -- Ji Aoi Isshi

Conviction is a person's highest wealth. Dhamma, when well-practiced, brings bliss. Truth is the highest of savors. Living with discernment, one's life is called best. -- Sutta Nipata

SIT. REST. WORK. Let these three words sink deep in your heart. Learn to sit silently, restfully, not fighting with yourself, relaxed. Be at rest... and when energy accumulates in you, start being creative. Paint, sing, dance, or do whatsoever you feel like doing to make this world a little more beautiful, a little more warm. -- Osho

If you want to be no different from the buddhas and Zen masters, just don't seek externally. The pure light in a moment of awareness in your mind is the Buddha's essence within you. -- Linji

Whoever takes a stick to beings desiring ease, when he himself is looking for ease, will meet with no ease after death. Whoever doesn't take a stick to beings desiring ease, when he himself is looking for ease, will meet with ease after death. -- Udana

The monkey is reaching for the moon in the water. Until death overtakes him he'll never give up. If he'd let go the branch and disappear in the deep pool, the whole world would shine with dazzling pureness. -- Hakuin

Ever grows the glory of him who is energetic, mindful and pure in conduct, discerning and self-controlled, righteous and heedful. -- Dhammapada

Taking hold, one's astray in nothingness; Letting go, the Origin's regained. Since the music stopped, no shadow's touched My door: again the village moon's above the river. -- Kokai

Blissful is passionlessness in the world, The overcoming of sensual desires; But the abolition of the conceit I am -- That is truly the supreme bliss. -- Udana

A disciple should avoid taking anything from anywhere knowing it (to belong to another). He should not steal nor incite another to steal. He should completely avoid theft. -- Sutta Nipata

Bamboo shadows sweep the stairs, Yet not a mote of dust is stirred; Moonbeams pierce to the bottom of the pool, yet in the water not a trace remains. -- Zen Dust

He should not kill a living being, nor cause it to be killed, nor should he incite another to kill. Do not injure any being, either strong or weak, in the world. -- Sutta Nipata

Better than a hundred years of mischief Is one day spent in contemplation. Better than a hundred years of ignorance Is one day spent in reflection. Better than a hundred years in idleness Is one day spent in determination. Better to live one day wondering How all things arise and pass away. -- Buddha

The evil-doer grieves here and hereafter; he grieves in both the worlds. He laments and is afflicted, recollecting his own impure deeds. -- Dhammapada

Whenever the soul has thoughts of "I" and "mine" it binds itself with its lower self, as a bird with the net of a snare. -- Maitri Upanishad Hidden birds sing as cool and clear As a bamboo forest. Between swinging willows sun beams glimmer Like golden thread. Clouds return to this calm valley. The winds carry the fragrance of almonds. By sitting alone all day long I clear my mind of a thousand thoughts. To speak of this is beyond our words; Only by sitting under the quiet forest Can we ever understand. -- Fa Yen

When things become manifest To the ardent meditating brahmin, All his doubts then vanish since he understands Each thing along with its cause. -- Udana

Mind set free in the Dharma-realm, I sit at the moon-filled window Watching the mountains with my ears, Hearing the stream with open eyes. Each molecule preaches perfect law, Each moment chants true sutra: The most fleeting thought is timeless, A single hair’s enough to stir the sea. -- Shutaku

Just as rain breaks through an ill-thatched house, so passion penetrates an undeveloped mind. -- Dhammapada

Last year in a lovely temple in Hirosawa, This year among the rocks of Nikko, All’s the same to me: Clapping hands, the peaks roar at the blue! -- Hakugai

Words cannot describe everything. The heart's message cannot be delivered in words. If one receives words literally, the message will be lost. -- Mu-mon

Those who mistake the unessential to be essential and the essential to be unessential, dwelling in wrong thoughts, never arrive at the essential. -- Dhammapada

People who study Buddhism should seek real, true perception and understanding for now. If you attain real, true perception and understanding, birth and death don't affect you. You are free to go or stay. You needn't seek wonders, for wonders come of themselves. -- Linji

If one, longing for sensual pleasure, achieves h, yes, he's enraptured at heart. The mortal gets what he wants. But if for that person -longing, desiring- the pleasures diminish, he's shattered, as if shot with an arrow. -- Sutta Nipata

Once a person has stopped discrimination, banished delusion, and ended the tricks of thought, he will be full of inner peace. -- Tong Po

But if it take not place in me, what avails it ? Everything lies in this, that it should take place in me. -- Meister Eckhart

My teacher said to me, "The treasure house within you contains everything, and you are free to use it. You don't need to seek outside." -- Dazhu

Better it is to live one day virtuous and meditative than to live a hundred years immoral and uncontrolled. -- Dhammapada

What grief or attachment can there be for a realized soul - a man of wisdom, when all the animate and inanimate objects of the world have become his self, when he sees oneness everywhere? -- Ishavasya upanishad

Let no one deceive another or despise anyone anywhere, or through anger or irritation wish for another to suffer. -- Sutta Nipata

Meditation needs to be integrated to your everyday actions, washing your face, eating, walking, working and that sort of things. One must do them with full awareness. Perception into the nature of things comes from doing such things wholeheartedly. -- Zhaozhou Congshen

May all creatures, all living things, all beings one and all, experience good fortune only. May they not fall into harm. -- Anguttara Nikaya

They do not lament over the past, they yearn not for what is to come, they maintain themselves in the present, thus their complexion is serene. -- Samyutta Nikaya

Those who would realize the practice of nonaction must arrive at the non-perception of the errors of people. This is non-moving nature. Deluded people simply stop the movement of their bodies, but as soon as they open their mouths they are talking about peoples' rights and wrongs, and contradicting the Way. -- Dajian Huineng

And just like a beautiful flower which has colour and also has perfume are the beautiful fruitful words of the man who speaks and does what he says. -- The Dhammapada

Lodging in the world, the body is like a dream. If one lives in peace, a day can be like a year. Trying to sleep, I toss and turn on the worn out mat, and pace around and around in my tattered monk’s shawl. The Master suggests I make my bed among the wind and bamboo, and have a drink beside the waters of the rocky spring. A nod of the head, and all worldly affairs seem wrong. Laughing at myself, I understand the wisdom of the Master. -- Su Shih

The man of meditation is always overflowing with joy. He is a giver: he gives delight, he gives joy, he gives beauty, he gives truth. He radiates truth, but so silently... without any declaration. -- Osho

Above, across or back again, wherever he goes in the world let him carefully scrutinise the rise and fall of compounded things. -- Itivuttaka

Original Face is the reality of realities: Stretch your hand to the winging bird. Vertical nose, horizontal eyes - and then? What if your mind is empty? -- Tokugaku

The worse of the two is he who, when abused, retaliates. One who does not retaliate wins a battle hard to win. -- Samyutta Nikaya

Do not live in the past or in the future, but live in the world of the present. One has to always understand that "now" is the only reality. -- Tong Po

Deep in the mountains, on an isolated peak, I live on my own in a stand of pines. In a simple hut, I sit meditating without concerns, silent and alone, dwelling peacefully, lighthearted. Once you've awakened, it's done: no effort needed. -- Yung-chia

One should first establish oneself in what is proper and only then try to instruct others. Doing this, the wise one will not be criticized. -- Dhammapada

Unaware of illusion or enlightenment, from this stone I watch the mountains, hear the stream. A three-day rain has cleansed the earth, a roar of thunder split the sky. Ever serene are linked phenomena, and though the mind's alert, it’s but an ash heap. Chilly, bleak as the dusk I move through, I return, a basket brimmed with peaches on my arm. -- Genko

Wonderful it is to train the mind so swiftly moving, seizing whatever it wants. Good is it to have a well-trained mind, for a well-trained mind brings happiness. -- Dhammapada

Do not engage into comparing yourself with others, otherwise you will only prevent your potential to grow. Not 2 people are comparable since each one of us is unique. Be and love what you are. -- Tong Wu

Not twice this day Inch time foot gem. This day will not come again. Each minute is worth a priceless gem. -- Takuan

For one who mindfully develops Boundless loving-kindness Seeing the destruction of clinging, The fetters are worn away. -- Itivuttaka

Now and again, it is necessary to seclude yourself among deep mountains and hidden valleys to restore your link to the source of life. Breathe out and let yourself soar to the ends of the universe; breathe in and bring the cosmos back inside. Next, breathe up all the fecundity and vibrancy of the earth. Finally, blend the breath of heaven and the breath of earth with that of your own, becoming the Breath of Life itself. -- Morihei Ueshiba In the ocean of the holy dharma There is neither movement nor stillness. The essence of the wave is like a mirror; When something comes, the reflection appears. When there is nothing in the mind, Wind and waves are both forgotten. -- Gido

With all his attachments cut, with the heart's pining subdued, calm and serene and happy is he, for he has attained peace of mind. -- Samyutta Nikaya

To seek Buddha's help is to lose Buddha. To seek the Master's help is to lose the Master. The most valuable treasure is with you; it can be found in yourself. Once you seek it outside, you will lose it. -- Linji

Good is restraint in the body; good is restraint in speech; good is restraint in thought. Restraint everywhere is good. The monk restrained in every way is freed from all suffering. -- Dhammapada

She is clarity. Hearing the truth, she is like a lake, Pure and tranquil and deep. Want nothing. Where there is desire, say nothing. Happiness or sorrow - Whatever befalls you, walk on Untouched, unattached. -- Buddha

A person with good eyes, encountering a treacherous, uneven place, would try hard to avoid it. A wise person, in the world of life, should avoid evil deeds. -- Udana

When water is pure and sparkling clear, You see straight to the bottom. When your mind holds no concern, No circumstance can turn you. And once your mind doesn't stray, A kalpa has no changes... From such awareness nothing hides. -- Cold Mountain

Let go of the past, let go of the future, let go of the present, and cross over to the farther shore of existence. With mind wholly liberated, you shall come no more to birth and death. -- Dhammapada

There is wonder in the budding of flowers, there is beauty in the falling of flowers. To be able to perceive the beauty of the things all around is to enter the gateway of Zen. -- Tsai Chih

To practice the Tao is like defending the forbidden Royal Palace under invasion. Guard it closely with your life, and fight for it with all your might! Behold, if the freezing cold has not yet penetrated to the core of your bones, how can it be possible for you to smell the fresh fragrance of the blooming plum blossom? -- Huang Po

One who is a master of knowledge, Who has lived the holy life, Is called one gone to the world's end, One who has reached the further shore. -- Itivuttaka

Serenity is the final word of all teachings; reflection is the response to all manifestations. Devoid of any effort, this response is natural and spontaneous. Disharmony will arise if in reflection there is no serenity. All will become wasteful and secondary if in serenity there is no reflection. The Truth of serene-reflection is perfect and complete. -- Hung Chih

One is one's own protector, one is one's own refuge. Therefore, one should control oneself, even as a trader controls a noble steed. -- Dhammapada

Dew and the moon, stars and streams, snow on pine trees, clouds hovering on the mountain peaks - From darkness, they all become glowingly bright; From obscurity, they all turn to resplendent light. Infinite wonder permeates this serenity; In this Reflection all intentional efforts vanish. -- Hung Chih

Slay anger and you will be happy, slay anger and you will not sorrow. For the slaying of anger in all its forms with its poisoned root and sweet sting-that is the slaying the nobles praise; with anger slain one weeps no more. -- Samyutta Nikaya

Spring has its hundred flowers, Autumn its many moons. Summer has cool winds, Winter its snow. If useless thoughts do not cloud your mind, Each day is the best of your life. -- Wu-Men-Hui-Kai

Silently and serenely one forgets all words; Clearly and vividly That appears before you. When one realizes it, it is vast and without edges; In its Essence, one is clearly aware. Singularly reflecting is this bright awareness, Full of wonder is this pure reflection. -- Hung Chih

Good is virtue until life's end, good is faith that is steadfast, good is the acquisition of wisdom, and good is the avoidance of evil. -- Dhammapada

Outwardly, all activities cease; Inwardly, the mind stops its panting. When one's mind has become a wall, Then you may begin to enter the Tao. -- Bodhidharma

Good are friends when need arises; good is contentment with just what one has; good is merit when life is at an end, and good is the abandoning of all suffering. -- Dhammapada

The entire universe is your own light; the entire universe is within your own light; there is no one in the whole universe that is not you. -- Nchangsha

Attaining this spacelike knowledge, One is forever free from grasping and clinging: Like space, it has no variation And is unobstructed in the world Space has no beginning, No middle, and no end; Its measure cannot be found - Enlightening beings’ knowledge is also thus. -- Avatamsaka Sutra

If for company you find a wise and prudent friend who leads a good life, you should, overcoming all impediments, keep his company joyously and mindfully. -- Dhammapada

For one who wants to directly experience the path of meditation, the normal mind is the path. What is meant by the "normal mind?" It is the mind that is free from construction and production, right and wrong, clinging and rejection, ordinary and saint. It is your everyday walking, standing, sitting and lying down, your personal encounters and contacts with things, which are all entirely just this path. -- Ma-tsu Tao

Better than a thousand hollow words Is one word that brings peace. Better than a thousand hollow verses Is one verse that brings peace. It is better to conquer yourself Than to win a thousand battles - Then the victory is yours. -- Buddha in the Dhammapada

Throroughly understanding the Dhamma and freed from longing through insight, the wise one rid of all desire is calm as a pool unstirred by water. -- Itivuttaka

The whole science of meditation is to help you to get rid of past and future; and in fact it is not much of a work, because the past is no more and the future is not yet, so you are simply getting rid of something which is not yet and something which is no more, it is not much of a work. You are entering into which is and which always is. Hence meditation is simple, just a right understanding is needed. -- Osho

Do not see the Tathagata in one teaching, one phenomena, one body, one land or one sentient being. You should see the Tathagata everywhere, in all places. -- Buddha

Delight in heedfulness! Guard well your thoughts! Draw yourself out of this bog of evil, even as an elephant draws himself out of the mud. -- Dhammapada

Any sensual bliss in the world, any heavenly bliss, isn't worth one sixteenth-sixteenth of the bliss of the ending of craving. -- Udana

The myriad differences resolved by sitting, all doors opened. In this still place I follow my nature, be what it may. From the one hundred flowers I wander freely, the soaring cliff, my hall of meditation. With the moon emerged, my mind is motionless. Sitting on this frosty seat, no further dream of fame. The forest, the mountain - follow their ancient ways. And through the long spring day, not even a shadow of a bird. -- Reizan

In this world, good it is to serve one's mother, good it is to serve one's father, good it is to serve the monks, and good it is to serve the holy ones. -- Dhammapada

Now and again, it is necessary to seclude yourself among deep mountains and hidden valleys to restore your link to the source of life. Breathe out and let yourself soar to the ends of the universe; breathe in and bring the cosmos back inside. Next, breathe up all the fecundity and vibrancy of the earth. Finally, blend the breath of heaven and the breath of earth with that of your own, becoming the Breath of Life itself. -- Morihei Ueshiba
