As Namaste is to say *may the Divine Essence IN me Embrace the Divine Essence IN you as a Divine Essence of One*, so too Metta is to say *may the Loving Kindness IN me Embrace the Loving Kindness IN you as Loving Kindness of One*, so too Zikr is to say *may the Self Remembering IN me Embrace the Self Remembering IN you as a Self Remembrance of One*. It is in the Inner Embracing of each other that we Realize that we are all cut from the same bolt of cloth yet most do not Realize it yet. -- Yogajyotii

For certain is death for the born, And certain is birth for the dead; Therefore over the inevitable Thou shouldst not grieve. -- The Bhagavad Gita Until today the precious gem's been buried, Now it flashes from the earth. Mind's clear at last. Zen-sitting, a stick of incense Lights the universe. I bow to Bodhidharma. -- Ryozan

One is not low because of birth nor does birth make one holy. Deeds alone make one low, deeds alone make one holy. -- Sutta Nipata

When you are one with your source you are plugged into an infinite supply of energy. The great path is clearly before your eyes, But the ignorant who are deluded And confused cannot recognize it. It is in one thought of the mind. So why search for it elsewhere? -- Pao-chih

Winning gives birth to hostility. Losing, one lies down in pain. The calmed lie down with ease, having set winning & losing aside. -- Samyutta Nikaya

Although we know that a frozen pond is entirely water, the sun's heat is necessary to melt it. Although we awaken to the fact that an ordinary person is Buddha, the power of dharma is necessary to make it permeate our cultivation. When the pond has melted, the water flows freely. When falsity is extinguished, the mind will be luminous and dynamic and then its function of penetrating brightness will manifest. -- Kuei-feng

Let no one deceive another or despise anyone anywhere, or through anger or irritation wish for another to suffer. -- Khuddakapatha

The self-controlled soul, who moves amongst sense objects, free from either attachment or repulsion, he wins eternal Peace. -- Bhagavad Gita

Wisdom is perishable. Unlike information or knowledge, it cannot be stored in a computer or recorded in a book. It expires with each passing generation. --Sid Taylor

Studying Zen is dropping off body and mind. Without depending on the burning of incense, bowing, chanting Buddha's names, repentance, or sutra reading, devote yourself to just sitting. Dropping of body and mind is zazen. When you just sit, you are free from the five sense desires and the five hindrances. -- Rujing

There are two forms of error now prevailing among followers of Zen, laymen as well as monks. The one thinks that there are wonderful things hidden in words and phrases, and those who hold this view try to learn many words and phrases. The second goes to the other extreme, forgetting that words are the pointing finger, showing one where to locate the moon... Only when these two erroneous views are done away with is there a chance for real advancement in the mastery of Zen. - D.T. Suzuki

He who does not strike nor makes others strike, who robs not nor makes others rob, sharing love with all that live, finds enmity with none. -- Itivuttaka

What is it in this teaching we call "Sitting in meditation?" In this teaching, "sitting" means without any obstruction anywhere. Outwardly and under all circumstances, not to activate thoughts. "Meditation" is internally to see the original nature and not become confused. -- Huineng

Should one not find a mature companion, Who will move about with one, a wise one who leads a good life, Let one wander alone like a king who has left behind a conquered land, like the elephant in the forest. -- Dhammapada

Dignity comes from using your inherent human resources, by doing things with your own bare hands, on the spot, properly & beautifully. You can do that: even in the worst of the worst situations, you can still make your life elegant. -- Chogyam Trungpa

Winds drive all the clouds Off the blue mountains; On the green mountain the moon rises One round pearl. -- Soiku Shigenmatsu

Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart. Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens. -- Carl Jung

Hate brings great misfortune, hate churns up and harms the mind; this fearful danger deep within most people do not understand. -- Itivuttaka

In spring, hundreds of flowers; in autumn, a harvest moon. In summer a refreshing breeze; in winter, snow will accompany you. If useless things do not hang in your mind, any season is a good season for you. -- Mu-mon

One should first establish oneself in what is proper and only then try to instruct others. Doing this, the wise one will not be criticized. -- Dhammapada

Why worry about tomorrow? Tomorrow will take care of itself. Now is the only moment that is. Tomorrow is pure fiction. Learn to live in the now and eternity will belong to you. -- Tishan

Sages are benevolent without trying, Trusted without speaking. They gain without seeking, Succeed without striving. They take naturalness to heart, Preserve ultimate reality, Embrace the Way, And promote sincerity, So the whole world follows them as echoes Respond to sounds; As shadows imitate forms. What they work on is the root. -- Wen-tzu

"As I am, so are others; as others are, so am I." Having thus identified self and others, harm no one nor have them harmed. -- Sutta Nipata

Heaven and earth come from the same root as myself. All things and I belong to one Whole. -- Seng-chao

Hermits hide from mankind Most go to the mountains to sleep Where green vines wind through woods And jade gorges echo unbroken Higher and higher enraptured On and on simply free Free of what stains the world Minds pure like the white lotus -- Cold Mountain

May all creatures, all living things, all beings one and all, experience good fortune only. May they not fall into harm. -- Anguttara Nikaya

Speaking in general the most difficult barrier is the conquest of lying. A man lies so much and so constantly both to himself and to others that he ceases to notice it. And the first effort required is to conquer lying. -- G. Gurdjieff

With all his attachments cut, with the heart's pining subdued, calm and serene and happy is he, for he has attained peace of mind. -- Samyutta Nikaya

The idler who does not exert himself when he should, who though young and strong is full of sloth, with a mind full of vain thoughts -- such an indolent man does not find the path to wisdom. -- The Dhammapada

This is the Mind-seal of not one thing. What is "not one thing?" Mountains fresh and green, Water clear and flowing. -- Yamaoka Tesshu

This mountain has neither dangerous rocks nor trees. It raises itself ten thousand feet towards the cold heaven. Even a stray cloud does not cling around the mountain. Only the moon showers its pale light abundantly over the summit. -- Jakushitsu

Greed is preventing you to live. If you want to receive all the blessings of existence, you will have to let go of greed. Live for now, allow yourself to fully appreciate each moment. Beware of the conditionings of your mind. Greed is a weed that has been given to you by those who are incapable of living life in its full splendour. -- Nah Ihno

Freedom from lust is happiness in the world, the going beyond all sensual desires. But the crushing out of the conceit "I am"- this is the highest happiness. -- Udana

With one blow of the pebble, everything I knew perished. What more is there for me to practice, what more to subdue? Moving about with ease, I conduct myself in the ancient Way, and I never feel any despondency. Wherever I am, I leave no traces; it is conduct apart from forms and sounds. Those in all the directions who are Enlightened in the Way are called "those of the highest talent." -- Hsiang-yen Chih-hsien

Learn this from the waters: in mountain clefts and chasms, loud gush the streamlets, but great rivers flow silently. -- Sutta Nipata

The means to study oneself is self-observation. There is no other way and no one can do this work for us. We must do it ourselves. -- P.D. Ouspensky

Devote yourself to the absolute emptiness; contemplate earnestly in Quiescence. All things are together in action, but I look into their non-action, for things are continuously moving, restless, yet each is proceeding back to its origin. Proceeding back to the origin means Quiescence. To be in Quiescence is to see "Being-for-itself." -- Lao tzu

Just as a tree, though cut down, sprouts up again if its roots remain uncut and firm, even so, until the craving that lies dormant is rooted out, suffering springs up again and again. -- Dhammapada

Feeling miserable? Lonely? Discontented? Meditation is the only cure to all your problems. But you have to put meditation on top of your priority list. Is it? -- Tishan

Light everywhere, I live in all. Avoiding thought, All appears. Yet should one of the six senses stir, Clouds gather. Delusion? Satori? Forget them. Follow the Law, all's well. Nirvana? Samsara? Airy flowers both. -- Chosetsu

One who, while himself seeking happiness, does not oppress with violence other beings who also desire happiness, will find happiness hereafter. -- Dhammapada

However deep your knowledge of the scriptures, it is no more than a strand of hair in the vastness of space. However important seems to be your worldly experience, it is but a drop of water in a deep ravine. -- Tokusan

If your mind is fixed on a certain spot, it will be seized by that spot and no activities can be performed efficiently. Not to fix your mind anywhere is essential. Not fixed anywhere, the mind is everywhere.... The Original Mind is like water which flows freely, whereas the deluded mind is like ice.... There is a passage in the Diamond Sutra that says: "The mind should operate without abiding anywhere." -- Takuan

Who is energetic and not indolent, In misfortune unshaken, Flawless in manner and intelligent, Such a one to honour may attain. -- Digha Nikaya

The present is the golden gate. Here-now is the golden gate. ...And you can be in the present only if you are not ambitious - no accomplishment, no desire to achieve power, money, prestige, even enlightenment, because all ambition leads you into the future. -- Osho

Mind set free in the Dharma-realm, I sit at the moon-filled window Watching the mountains with my ears, Hearing the stream with open eyes. Each molecule preaches perfect law, Each moment chants true sutra: The most fleeting thought is timeless, A single hair's enough to stir the sea. -- Shutaku

With firm resolve, guard your own mind! Whoso untiringly pursues the Dhamma and the Discipline Shall go beyond the round of births and make an end of suffering. -- Digha Nikaya

We all have the clear, wondrously bright field from the beginning. Many lifetimes of misunderstanding come only from distrust, hindrance, and screens of confusion that we create in a scenario of isolation. -- Hongzhi Zhengjue

Whoever through desire, hate or fear, Or ignorance should transgress the Dhamma, All his glory fades away Like the moon during the waning half. Whoever through desire, hate or fear, Or ignorance never transgresses the Dhamma, All his glory ever increases Like the moon during the waxing half. -- Digha Nikaya

The friend who is a helpmate, the friend in happiness and woe, the friend who gives good counsel, the friend who sympathises too -- these four as friends the wise behold and cherish them devotedly as does a mother her own child. -- Digha Nikaya

If you think that you have cut off illusory mind, instead of simply clarifying how illusory mind melts, illusory mind will come up again, as though you had cut the stem of a blade of grass... and left the root alive. -- Menzen Zuiho

Meditation happens only to those who are not result-oriented. Meditation is a non-goal-oriented state. -- Osho

This cold night bamboos stir, Their sound - now harsh, now soft - Sweeps through the lattice window. Though ear's no match for mind, What need, by lamplight, Of a single Scripture leaf? -- Kido

Who is hospitable, and friendly, Liberal and unselfish, A guide, an instructor, a leader, Such a one to honour may attain. -- Digha Nikaya

How profoundly silent is the temple of Tao! Boundless and infinite, it is the dwelling place of the divine. The light-hall is wide and high, yet awed by silence. Trees with colored leaves are flourishing and spreading. Forgetful of words I roam and rest here. -- Ni Tsan

To have much wealth and ample gold and food, but to enjoy one's luxuries alone -- this is a cause of one's downfall. -- Sutta Nipata

For about thirty years I wandered, searching for the real Tao everywhere. How many times did I see the trees grow new branches and watch the old leaves fall. But at this moment, seeing the peach blossoms, I am suddenly enlightened and have no more doubts. -- Huang Shan-ku

Who is wise and virtuous, Gentle and keen-witted, Humble and amenable, Such a one to honour may attain. -- Digha Nikaya
