When the mind is Transparent and pure As if reflected on the Mirror-like surface of the water, There is nothing in the World that you would dislike. When it is serene As the light breeze In the sunshine, there will be No one whom you Would like to forget. -- Pa-ta Shan-jen

Much though he recites the sacred texts, but acts not accordingly, that heedless man is like a cowherd who only counts the cows of others -- he does not partake of the blessings of the holy life. -- Dhammapada

Do not believe anything on the mere authority of teachers or priests. Accept as true and as the guide to your life only that which accords with your own reason and experience, after thorough investigation. Accept only that which contributes to the well-being of yourself and others. -- Buddha

If we happen to receive the instructions of a good friend and suddenly awaken to this void and calm awareness, the calm awareness becomes free of thought and formless. Who then would assume that there is *self* or *person*? -- Chinul

If one, longing for sensual pleasure, achieves h, yes, he's enraptured at heart. The mortal gets what he wants. But if for that person -longing, desiring- the pleasures diminish, he's shattered, as if shot with an arrow. -- Sutta Nipata

Emptiness is most Filling as in Silence is where All is Heard Void is also Full for that is where Lives the Perfected Word, BE a Stillness and Listen/Look and Learn as Apperception For IN/AS your Awakening is where lies a True Perfection. -- Yogajyotii

One should first establish oneself in what is proper and only then try to instruct others. Doing this, the wise one will not be criticized. -- Dhammapada

Wonderful it is to train the mind so swiftly moving, seizing whatever it wants. Good is it to have a well-trained mind, for a well-trained mind brings happiness. -- Dhammapada

For one who mindfully develops Boundless loving-kindness Seeing the destruction of clinging, The fetters are worn away. -- Itivuttaka

The worse of the two is he who, when abused, retaliates. One who does not retaliate wins a battle hard to win. -- Samyutta Nikaya

Above, across or back again, wherever he goes in the world let him carefully scrutinise the rise and fall of compounded things. - Itivuttaka

A person with good eyes, encountering a treacherous, uneven place, would try hard to avoid it. A wise person, in the world of life, should avoid evil deeds. -- Udana

With all his attachments cut, with the heart's pining subdued, calm and serene and happy is he, for he has attained peace of mind. -- Samyutta Nikaya

Good is restraint in the body; good is restraint in speech; good is restraint in thought. Restraint everywhere is good. The monk restrained in every way is freed from all suffering. -- Dhammapada

One who is a master of knowledge, Who has lived the holy life, Is called one gone to the world's end, One who has reached the further shore. -- Itivuttaka

Let go of the past, let go of the future, let go of the present, and cross over to the farther shore of existence. With mind wholly liberated, you shall come no more to birth and death. -- Dhammapada

All things are just what they are and have no distinction of good and bad. However, because of the act of naming, a peacock, for example, is regarded as beautiful and a crow regarded as ugly. Is the crow really ugly? -- F. Wenyi

One who makes distinctions of respect and disdain, high and low status, the big and the small will be unable to perceive the truth underlying all things. -- Shanhui

The unseen force that created the universe is a most invaluable thing. Its progress lies in simple everyday happenings. Any method or technique that is too complex will only give rise to complications. -- Fayan

Fir, bamboo, and pure shadow merge; I move unnoticed where my thoughts incline. Chill springs up before the rain. Silence ends; a monk suddenly returns. Bug tracks bore into obscure holes; moss roots join broken ridgepoles. My reflections turn to a hidden place, deep, then down from the top of the peak, step by step. -- The Monk Pao Tan

What do you Fear it's so bad that you refuse to Wake-Up For not letting it go you can't Drink from Awakening's Cup, An Infinite Present Moment from Moment to Moment anew IS your Salvation though indeed only Enjoyed by the few. -- Yogajyotii

The wisdom of Enlightenment is inherent in every one of us. It is because of the delusion under which our mind works that we fail to realize it ourselves, and we seek the advice and the guidance of enlightened ones. -- Hui-neng

Are you concerned with enlightenment, which implies a static attainment, or rather enlightening, an unending process of continual opening? Are you concerned with answers or rather with boundless questions? For the answer never fails to kill enlightening the mind then reverts to the static knowing, soon becomes caught again in the web of associations and reduces the entirety of the world to the mundane. -- Ji Aoi Isshi

The body knows pleasure, the mind knows happiness, the heart knows joy, the fourth - the ultimate awareness that makes one awakened - knows bliss. Bliss is the goal of being a seeker, and awareness is the path towards it. -- Osho

How amazing it is That all people Have this but cannot polish It into bright clarity. In darkness unawakened, They make foolishness Cover their wisdom. -- Hongzhi Zhengjue

Knowing that the other person is angry, one who remains mindful and calm acts for his own best interest and for the other's interest, too. -- Samyutta Nikaya

In the early days many sages stressed the follies and dangers of impurity. When delusion, perverted views, and bad thinking habits are eliminated, the mind is as clear and tranquil as the autumn stream. It is pure and quiescent, placid and free from attachment. -- Master Kuei-shan Ling-yu

By doing evil, one defiles oneself; by avoiding evil, one purifies oneself. Purity and impurity depend upon oneself: no one can purify another. -- Dhammapada

In the World Barefoot and naked of breast, I mingle with the people Of the world. My clothes are ragged And dust laden, And I am ever blissful. I use no magic to extend my life; Now, before me, The dead trees become alive. -- Kakuan

The past should not be followed after and the future not desired; what is past is dead and gone and the future is yet to come. -- Majjhima Nikaya

You can't hold a Dream or Memory why do you try Like air in your hand full but always empty and dry, So Awakening is a state of BEing without the herd Just as the Sound of Silence none audibly Heard. -- Yogajyotii

Both Bull and Self Transcended Whip, rope, person, and bull All merge in No-Thing. This heaven is so vast No message can stain it. How may a snowflake Exist in a raging fire? Here are the footprints Of the patriarchs. -- Kakuan

Life is swept along, next-to-nothing its span. For one swept to old age no shelters exist. Perceiving this danger in death, one should drop the world's bait and look for peace. -- Samyutta Nikaya

The Bull Transcended Astride the bull, I reach home. I am serene. The bull too can rest. The dawn has come. In blissful repose, Within my thatched dwelling I have abandoned The whip and rope. -- Kakuan

With desire the world is tied down. With the subduing of desire it's freed. With the abandoning of desire all bonds are cut through. -- Samyutta Nikaya

Communication by silence is deeper than words can reach. Whatever else may come our way in this surprising life, silence will always unite us. -- David Steindl-Rast
