If you catch even a glimpse Of your self nature, It is the same as reading And understanding all The sutras simultaneously, None, excepted, Without so much as holding One in your hand or Reading a word. -- Bassui

One is not low because of birth nor does birth make one holy. Deeds alone make one low, deeds alone make one holy. -- Sutta Nipata

You must advance beyond The stage where your reason Is of any avail. Discover the all-embracing Mind that does not come into Existence with the body or die With the body’s destruction, Yet suffuses every act of Seeing, hearing, smelling, Speaking, moving. -- Bassui

Better than a thousand Hollow words Is one word that brings peace. Better than a thousand Hollow verses Is one verse that brings peace. Better than a hundred Hollow lines Is one line of the law, Bringing peace. It is better to Conquer yourself Than to win a thousand battles. Then the victory is yours. -- The Dhammapada

If one, longing for sensual pleasure, achieves it, yes, he's enraptured at heart. The mortal gets what he wants. But if for that person -- longing, desiring -- the pleasures diminish, he's shattered, as if shot with an arrow. -- Sutta Nipata

If you don't use ordinary life as a method to meditation, your meditation is bound to become something of an escape. If your ordinary life becomes extraordinary, only then are you spiritual. -- Zen

He who does not strike nor makes others strike, who robs not nor makes others rob, sharing love with all that live, finds enmity with none. -- Itivuttaka

It is good to fall a few times, get hurt, stand up again - to go astray a few times. There is no harm. The moment you find you have gone astray, come back. Life has to be learned through trial and error. -- Osho

Few people believe their Inherent mind is Buddha. Most will not take this seriously, And therefore are cramped. They are wrapped up in illusions, cravings, Resentments, and other afflictions, All because they love the cave of ignorance. -- Fenyang

It IS what it IS AS it IS and nothing more So it is mere distraction to wonder what it is for, You can't Truly Live Life projecting your notions They are based not on Fact but on emotions. -- Yogajyotii

Because you grasp labels and slogans, You are hindered by Those labels and slogans, Both those used in Ordinary life and those Considered sacred. Thus they obstruct your Perception of objective truth, And you cannot understand clearly. -- Linji

With all his attachments cut, with the heart's pining subdued, calm and serene and happy is he, for he has attained peace of mind. -- Samyutta Nikaya

Do not look for peace and freedom in the outside world. Real freedom and real happiness are inner states which are yours when you are in harmony with the divine. -- Ramdas

The sound of a swollen Mountain stream rapidly rushing Makes one know How very quickly life itself Is pressed along its course. -- Saigyo

Freedom from lust is happiness in the world, the going beyond all sensual desires. But the crushing out of the conceit "I am" - this is the highest happiness. -- Udana

Let go of those conditioned notions to get Free Of the Desire for the phenomenal so you can BE, Each step you take toward your Awakening Gets you closer to the Source of it's Beckoning. -- Yogajyotii

To shake off the dust of human ambition I sit on moss in Zen robes of stillness, While through the window, In the setting sun of late autumn, Falling leaves whirl And drop to the ground. -- Tesshu Tokusa

To return to your original state of being, You must become a master of stillness. Activity for health’s sake, Never carried to the point of strain, Must alternate with perfect stillness. Sitting motionless as a rock, Turn next to stillness of mind. Close the gates of the senses. Fix your mind upon one object or, Even better, enter a state Of objectless awareness. Turn the mind in upon itself And contemplate the inner radiance.

The Divine Union anew each Present Moment Lives Can not be rendered tangibly rather Peace it Gives, As there is One Truth and One Reality to BE So too there is One Journey that Two can See. -- Yogajyotii

Good are friends when need arises; good is contentment with just what one has; good is merit when life is at an end, and good is the abandoning of all suffering. -- Dhammapada

Inside and outside are one, Movement and stillness are the same. In all these, functioning needs To be free and clear. If this is not so then All the Buddha’s holy sutras And all of the sayings of the patriarchs Become mere tangles of empty words. The Way of Zen And the Buddha-dharma Also become dead things. -- Torei

One who, while himself seeking happiness, does not oppress with violence other beings who also desire happiness, will find happiness hereafter. -- Dhammapada

Above all, don't wish to become a future Buddha; your only concern should be, as thought follows thought, to avoid clinging to any of them. -- Dogen

If your mind is fixed on a certain spot, It will be seized by that spot, And no activities can be performed efficiently. Not to fix your mind anywhere is essential. Not fixed anywhere, the mind is everywhere. The Original Mind is like water which flows freely, Whereas the deluded mind is like ice. There is a passage in the Diamond Sutra that says: "The mind should operate without abiding anywhere." -- Takuan

Who is energetic and not indolent, In misfortune unshaken, Flawless in manner and intelligent, Such a one to honour may attain. -- Digha Nikaya

Awakening is as encompassing as True Love As seen in the eyes of the new born the Wonder of, There is no forced Attention for All IS AS it IS Without projected conditioned notions of that or this. -- Yogajyotii

Zen practice is not clarifying conceptual distinctions, but throwing away one’s preconceived views and notions and the sacred texts and all the rest, and piercing through the layers of coverings over the spring of self behind them. All the holy ones have turned within and sought in the self, and by this went beyond all doubt. To turn within means all the 24 hours and in every situation, to pierce one by one through the layers covering the self, deeper and deeper, to a place that cannot be described. -- Daikaku

With firm resolve, guard your own mind! Whoso untiringly pursues the Dhamma and the Discipline Shall go beyond the round of births and make an end of suffering. -- Digha Nikaya

What do you mean by the true Buddha, The true Dharma and the true Way? Would you be good enough to explain to us? The Master said, Buddha - this is the cleanness And purity of the mind. The Dharma-this is the shining Brightness of the mind. The Way this is the light That is never obstructed anywhere. The three are in fact one. All are empty names and Have no true reality. -- Lin-chi

Who gives, his virtues shall increase; Who is self-curbed, no hatred bears; Whoso is skilled in virtue, evil shuns, And by the rooting out of lust and hate And all delusion, comes to be at peace. -- Digha Nikaya

No written word or practiced orientation or a Map Will ever guarantee that Divine Union will drop in lap, Neither Awakening or Love can be predictive Though once Awakened are very much addictive. -- Yogajyotii

Whoever through desire, hate or fear, Or ignorance should transgress the Dhamma, All his glory fades away Like the moon during the waning half. Whoever through desire, hate or fear, Or ignorance never transgresses the Dhamma, All his glory ever increases Like the moon during the waxing half. -- Digha Nikaya

Attaining the heart Of the sutra, Are not even the sounds Of the bustling marketplace The preaching of the Dharma? -- Dogen

The Art of Peace begins with you. Work on yourself and your appointed Task in the Art of Peace. Everyone has a spirit that can be refined, A body that can be trained in some manner, A suitable path to follow. You are here for no other purpose Than to realize your inner divinity And manifest your innate enlightenment. Foster peace in your own life And then apply the Art to all that you encounter. -- Morihei Ueshiba

The friend who is a helpmate, the friend in happiness and woe, the friend who gives good counsel, the friend who sympathises too -- these four as friends the wise behold and cherish them devotedly as does a mother her own child. -- Digha Nikaya

Harboring old conditioned notions Suffering it's Due Yet Divine Union is Free and Light and always New, You think those notions are protection and secure But a Lonely imprisonment is what you must endure. -- Yogajyotii

People who really have Their minds on the Way Do not forget work on the fundamental No matter what they are doing. Yet if they still distinguish this work From ordinary activities Even as they do them together, They will naturally be concerned About being distracted by activities And forgetting the meditation work. This is because of viewing Things as outside the mind. -- Muso

Who is hospitable, and friendly, Liberal and unselfish, A guide, an instructor, a leader, Such a one to honour may attain. -- Digha Nikaya

Kill hatred and you shall have peace and happiness. Kill hatred and you shall have no more sorrow. It is hatred that devours all your goodness. -- Buddha

When you set out to look for the Way, At once it changes to something That is to be sought in your self. When sight becomes no-sight, You come to possess the jewel, But you have not yet fully penetrated into it. Suddenly one day everything is empty like space That has no inside or outside, no bottom or top, And you are aware of one principle Pervading all the ten thousand things. You know then that your heart Is so vast that it can never be measured. -- Daikaku

To have much wealth and ample gold and food, but to enjoy one's luxuries alone -- this is a cause of one's downfall. -- Sutta Nipata

For we too nestle in those same Arms. So if we live or die, we face either Unconcerned like the glistening Snows beneath the summer sun. And, even though there is Nowhere to escape, together, We will melt serenly into the warm, Dry winds. -- Ji Aoi Isshi

One who destroys life, utters lies, takes what is not given, goes to another man's wife, and is addicted to intoxicating drinks -- such a man digs up his own root even in this world. -- Dhammapada
